Teaching Firm Foundations

Moving on from Mt Sinai and The Ten Commandments, which were the foundational teaching upon which the Israelites built their community, we took time out in November 2008, to remind ourselves of the foundational truths that we're building on at King's:


"Getting in the Way of Peace"

"How to Keep Free"
Acts 9:1-22
Click here to listen to this talk We looked at how we were made by God and what a big God he is and always will be. We read "For in him we live and move and have our being." Repentance was looked at and what it involved. How to keep free was spoken about.


"I am Jesus! On your Damascus Road"
Acts 9:1-22
Click here to listen to this talk Georges spoke about Saul's conversion on the Road to Damascas. He reminded us that if God can call Saul who hated Jesus and Christ's followers, we can be certain that we are not outside God's love. He also said that it is Jesus' power which changes Paul; not something in himself. It is Jesus' power which changes the community. Georges said that following Jesus will not be easy but we need to be encouraged because God is with us.

"Fathers" - Dave Sansum

"Being A Missionary Church" - Robin Hawkins
Matt 28:19-20; 1 Cor 9:16-23
Click here to listen to this talk Robin outlined the strategy that God's given us for reaching out to our friends. He showed us that people are on a journey to faith, and anything we can do to help them long journey is effective evangelism. He encouraged us to pray for those for whom we are in faith for salvation, and to be proactive in pursuing what must be genuine friendships, as we help people to faith.

"The Cross" - Stephen Moore

Click here to listen to this talk Stephen looked at the suffering of Jesus on the cross. He showed us how He suffered in our place, and went on to explore the divine exchange that took place.


"The Woman at the Well" - Robin Hawkins
John 4:1-42
Click here to listen to this talk Robin looked at how sowing the seed of God's Word can be a wasteful business; but those who do respond make up for all the wastage. He went on to look at Jesus' encounter with this woman, and explored all the obstacles that Jesus had to overcome in order to speak to her. Robin looked specifically at how to overcome tiredness in God's work. He then went on to look at how Jesus led this conversation, and how He used spirtual gifts to reach her heart. The result was that many came to faith in that community.

"An Attitude of Outreach" - Georges Kisolmbola

Click here to listen to this talk Georges looked at the Church in Antioch, which had an attitude of outreach. He compared it with the church today and challenged us to also have an attitude of outreach in the name of Jesus to the world around us.

"Healing" - Stephen Moore

Click here to listen to this talk Stephen looked at healings that are recorded in the book of Matthew. Jesus healed a leper, a paralized man, and many other sicknesses in different people.


"A Worshipping Church" - Robin Hawkins
Revelation 4
Click here to listen to this talk Robin talked about worship starting at the throne of God in Heaven and went on to say that although we may not experience this yet, the Holy Spirit does give us glimpses of glory. This will arise out of a life that is spent walking with God, serving God and worshipping Him 24/7. He then went on to describe ways that, in bringing an offering to the Lord, we bring not only our money but also a spiritual gift that will be a blessing, not only to the Lord, but to our brothers and sisters.

"Jesus' Strategy For Building His Church" - Robin Hawkins

He used the Corinthian church as an example, with its divisions, legal suits, immorality, abuse of communion and spiritual gifts, quarrels, jealousy, and all manner of worldly thinking. Tempted as we might be to write them off, Paul didn't. Rather he sorted them out by firstly reminding them of who they were, then whose they were. Lastly he talked about love that seeks the interests of others above our own..

"The Importance Of Being Church" - Robin Hawkins

Click here to listen to this talk Robin contrasted the world's view of the Church with that of the Bible. He showed how Jesus is passionate about His Church, and how He is making us into a family who love and care for each other, and who encourage and exhort one another in the building up of our faith. This is not always achieved easily, but it's worth striving for, and the end result will be magnificent! .

"The Holy Spirit - The River Of Life" - Robin Hawkins

Click here to listen to this talk Robin used the vision in Ezekiel of the River of God coming from the Temple as a description of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives as someone upon whom we are totally dependent to bear the fruit of Christ's character and to carry on His ministry. He encouraged us to move deeper from ankle deep and knee deep and have the courage to "swim out of our depth" in the current of the Holy Spirit.

"Changed by Grace" - Robin Hawkins

Click here to listen to this talk in which Robin looked at a number of Scriptures which underlined how we are not only saved by grace, but sanctified (made like Jesus) by trusting in God's grace. He reminded us that the Holy Spirit is God's grace gift to us, and that we've been set free from the Law and legalism, but now God's intention for us is to be those who reign in life. He warned us to avoid the Galations mistake of starting in grace and going back to law; and he also reminded us that the many encouragements and instructions found in the NT, about how we are to live, are there to stir up the grace of God in us, "teaching us to say No to unrighteousness.

"A Foundation of Grace" - Robin Hawkins

Click here to listen to this talk in which Robin talked of how our salvation is a work of God's grace from start to finish, initiated and planned by Him from before the beginning of time. Eph 2:1 describes us as being "dead in our trespasses" until God raised us up and brought us alive again in Christ. That moment of awakening made us aware of God's existence for the first time, and started us on a journey of faith that took us to the cross as we entered a covenant relationship with God in Christ.

"Repentance" - Georges Kisombola
Heb 6:1-2, 1John 1:7-10, Ephesians 5:8-11
Click here to listen to this talk in which Georges showed us the basic necessity of repentance, and challenged us to make it our lifestyle. Real repentance will result in a change of heart towards sin, and a changed lifestyle. He then took us into 1John 1:7-10, and showed us how this is a daily walk of godliness; the importance of living in openness with one another - walking in the light; and a readiness to confess our sin, ie, to be accountable both to the Lord Jesus, and to one another.

"The Spirit and the Word" - David Sansum
2 Timothy 3:14-17, Colossians 3:12-16, Ephesians 2:19-22
Click here to listen to this talk. David started us off in this new direction by geting us thinking about the foundations upon which we should be building as a New Testament covenant community. He reminded us that we are a Word and Spirit community, letting the Word of God dwell richly among us, and seeking to be filled with the Holy Spirit and live in obedience to Him - whether that's on a Sunday morning, or in our daily lives.
