Questions from Sunday 27th February 2011

The message was brought this week by Dave Sansum

Scriptures Used
Nehemiah 8:5-12

Title: "Knowing God and Knowing Ourselves"

Summary:

Dave explained that the Book of the Law of Moses was the same as the First five books of the modern Old Testament (Genesis to Deuteronomy), and emphasised the Israelites response to the reading of the Law. Should we respond to God's message with grief or joy?

In the Bible God's shows us what He is like, and what people are like. As Christians it is vitally important to read the Bible to develop our relationship with God and to understand ourselves better.

Dave gave a summary of some of the things that we can learn about God and people from the accounts of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses. We learned about the power, creativity, love, goodness, justice, judgment, holiness, mercy, faithfulness, patience, provision and deliverance that we find in God (Exodus 34:6-7). We also learned that God loves and values people, that we fall short of His standard (cause for grief) and can be very grateful indeed for His mercy (cause for joy). Christians have great cause for joy as we live in the knowledge of the mercy that was purchased for us by Jesus.

  1. In what way does reading the Bible deepen your relationship with God and your knowledge of yourself?
  2. Give some examples of what you have learned about God and yourself from reading the Bible.
  3. Give examples of times when your reading of the Bible has resulted in the experience of grief or joy.
